RECLAIMED AND UNIQUE AMERICAN WOOD PRODUCTS
Palust Hudson is an innovative wood products company founded on a love of wood and a desire to re-discover some of the great American species time has forgotten.
Our approach to reclaimed wood is innovative in the industry. Through our Demolition-to-Design® approach we see the full life-cycle of the material. We perform the demolition of old mills in the southeastern United States, extracting the wood and materials and then producing it into wood products that customers can site install and finish. This process allows us to select the best material and then preserve it during the demolition process. Also, by in-sourcing the wood production, we are able to quality control the full product life-cycle. We currently offer two species in our Demolition-to-Design products: Long Leaf Heart Pine (Pinus Palustris) and Hard Maple (Acer Saccharum).
Evolving from this process, we have discovered many forgotten American hardwoods that are still prevalent in our forests, but that have been overlooked by traditional wood products companies. These niche species offer unique grain and colors for architects, designers, and end customers for site finished projects. These species were all used extensively in the 17th, 18th, and 19th century, but fell out of favor in the 20th century and early 21st century with the influx of exotic species from un-sustainable forestry practices in South America, Africa, and Australia. Many of these exotic species are facing extinction now, with many providers resorting to renaming other somewhat similar species to the original species. Currently, we see this with “Mahogany”, or swietenia macrophylla. Cherished from the 16th century to later 20th century, “Mahogany” and its straight grain and easy workability made it one of the most sought after woods in the world and even contributed to colonial battles for control of timberland. By the 1970’s with limited supply left and the species being placed on the CITES list (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), wood products companies moved to include other unrelated species as “Mahogany”. Now “Mahogany” encompasses species that have little resemblance to swietenia macrophylla in terms of mechanical properties, grain detail, and overall looks.
This marketing confusion is why we make sure we give customers the exact scientific species of the wood products we sell. We are rooted in honoring our temperate grown wood species, that are sustainable and renewable and produced in our production facilities in Valley, AL and Sparta, GA. It is in these locations our demolition and wood production teams work hand in hand to forge wood products. Our sales and customer service team is available via phone, email, and text to answer any questions or help you with your product selections.
